SCW Open Mic Night

St. Charles West High School Speech Team hosted its first Open Mic Night on Friday, May 20th to raise funds to send a SCW representative to the National Competition.

Creative talent abounded in the form of music, poetry, and storytelling. While some students perfomed accappella, others played guitars, pianos and percussion instruments. Original compositions were equally represented as were covers songs.

Alex and Zach of the band, A Big Sad Whale, opened the show with an original composition that could be the anthem of writer's worldwide, Twenty-First Century Novelist.

In addition, cultural diversity was well-represented and celebrated. One of the more surprising entertainers, Codey Shaffer, opened with yodeling in German and ended with a beautiful rendition of Hallelejah in Italian.

Maritza Fuentes sang a traditional Spanish song commemorating the Virgin of Guadelupe.

Elizabeth Lemma belted out a song by Adele which was worthy of a spot on Glee. Her powerful and full-bodied voice was amazing!

Brittany Broder is the National Competition representative for SCW Speech Team.

Alexander W. Dabney read some of his award winning poetry which is already under consideration for publication. Not bad for a high school junior!

Other participants included Rachel Anders, Jeff Bigg, Jesse Debo, and Mikki Galent.

John Flynn closed the show with acoustic guitar selections and singing.
